Adopt a bird
Whether you're looking for a cockatiel, a cockatoo, or some bird in between, EBR has a great selection of available birds ready to join your family!
Give a bird the gift of a forever home
Adopting a pet can be an exciting and important decision for individuals and families alike. Exotic birds provide homes with so much fun and long-term companionship. Their intelligence, beautiful colors, quirky dispositions, and occasional feistiness make them rewarding pets for many.
Adopting a bird through EBR is simple! If you're interested in adopting, just follow the steps outlined below and you will breeze right through.
We currently only adopt to homes within the states of Oregon and Washington. Due to Oregon Animal Rescue Entity regulations, prospective adoptions to the state of Washington may have extra complications.
How do I adopt?
-
Bird Care Class: Start by taking our free online class. This will give you the basics when it comes to parrot ownership and some helpful information about what to expect.
-
Questionnaire: Once you pass the Bird Care Class, you will be emailed an adoption questionnaire. This is our way of getting to know you and helping you find your next feathered family member. (Because EBR is entirely volunteer-run, communication can be delayed by up to a week)
-
Home Inspection: One of our volunteers will work with you to conduct a 30- to 60-minute virtual home inspection using Google Meet. During the inspection, we will have you give us a tour of all the areas of the home that humans typically frequent (living rooms, family rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, etc.) to look for potential bird hazards and to answer any questions you might have about parrot ownership.
-
Connect: Our Bird Coordinator will email you to discuss preferences and help you find the right birds. They will connect you with foster families and you can schedule meetings. See our available birds here.
-
Visit Birds: EBR requires at least three visits for potential adoptive homes. Some visits will require you to travel to the foster home where the bird is currently housed, while in others the bird will be brought to your home. This is a vital step, as you'll be using each of these visits to evaluate your compatibility with the bird.
-
Adopt: Once you find the bird of your dreams, our Bird Coordinator will email you an Adoption Agreement to sign, and a PayPal invoice for the adoption fee.
